Celebrating the Freedom to Read

Celebrate your right to read! September 22 to 28 is Banned Books Week! Visit the library to participate or browse and borrow from our Banned & Challenged Books collection on Sora. Learn more about this important issue at bannedbooksweek.org.

We are so excited to have student engaging with our collection in new ways this week. Here are some library displays that are spread out across the room, and many are student-centered and interactive. A special shout-out to Ms. Kim's classes, who have been learning more about banned books and had many thoughts to share.

According to the American Library Association (ALA), book censorship surged 65% in 2023 compared to 2022, reaching the highest levels ever documented. 4,240 unique book titles were either challenged or banned outright in schools and libraries. Learn more at ALA.org/bbooks.

Check out our collection on the Sora App! Go to the "Explore" tab and look for the collection called "Banned Books."

According to Pen America, 41% of banned books in 2023 had LGBTQ+ characters or themes. 21% of banned books had characters of color or themes of race and racism. Florida and Texas lead the country in number of bans, but the crisis has spread to 41 states and 247 public school districts. Learn more at pen.org/book-bans.
